To begin I would like to say congratulations to former editor Wayne Carter and Godspeed. I would also like to welcome new editor Bob Blubaugh and wish him luck in filling Wayne’s shoes. I’ve been told by some that the Carroll County Times is nothing more than a rehash of The Baltimore Sun. Those people truly don’t understand the need the Times fills in our community in keeping us up to date on what is happening all around us on a daily basis.
As a way of introduction to the new editor, I am the local voice of the middle. I get to throw stones in both directions in hopes of bringing us all closer together for our mutual benefit.
I was going to lead off with Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez but today’s news cycle is like that little dog Toto tugging at the curtain surrounding the POTUS. The screaming headlines of the day are: “the budget deficit jumped 77% in the first quarter” and “recent pictures reveal North Korea has begun rebuilding its missile producing facility.” This is so shameful to Sen. Ted Cruz that he had to grow a beard to hide his face. Those early tax filers are finding the new, simpler tax system isn’t as rosy as it was sold to be. Truly the Emperor wears no clothes. The stock market that he loves to hold up as his shining example showed us in December just how fragile that claim is. Too many more 77 percent increases on the debt will show us how real wealth is reassigned at warp speed.
As Bernie Sanders runs around the country touting affordable medical care for all and free 4-year college tuition, the Dems have repeated the same mistake they made in the last election cycle by allowing him to run as a Democrat. If he wants to be a Democrat let him switch his party affiliation. Otherwise he should be forced to run as a third party extremist where he belongs. Socialism is not an issue any party can win with in this country at the present time and circumstances. The bottom line is somebody has to pay and to date none of them have produced numbers that add up.
The Republicans pretended to explore all alternatives to Obamacare. They didn’t do too bad a job. However, had the Democrats been allowed to meaningfully participate the way government is supposed to work, I think the final plan could have been something we all could live with. Unfortunately partisan politics and the neverending next election had more impact on the results than the needs of the American people.
CNN’s Van Jones posed the question if K-12 isn’t socialism why would adding just 4 more years make it socialism. My answer to Van is open your eyes. Teachers in k-12 all over the country are striking for more money that strapped state and local governments just don’t have. Baltimore City is graduating students that can’t read and write. Does he really think education via bureaucracy is what businesses are looking for to mold its top candidates?
When I heard that Starbucks owner Harold Schultz was considering running as a third party moderate candidate, a feeling of joy came over me as for once in my life I could have a candidate I wanted to vote for and not the least of two bad choices. When the panic-ridden Dems screamed don’t do it I penned a piece for a column. The piece kept growing and growing. It is currently more than 3,500 words and still growing. This most generous paper allows me 900 words so I’ve decided to spread my key points over several articles as his plans to run or not emerge.
The biggest take for now is the Democratic party has been corrupted badly by opportunist Sanders milking the great recession for everything it was worth. He has run all over the country using the name recognition he worked so hard to earn as the anti-Hilary candidate selling this beautiful Socialist agenda with a Robin Hood take from the rich and give to the poor theme. It’s exactly what people that have been down for almost a decade want to hear. I’ve been there and I know it sounded good to me when I was there. The problem is this is nothing more than partisan politics. They tell you what you want to hear so that you will vote for them. Once they get elected they wake up to the fact that the wealthiest people make the rules. They won’t just let you take their money and give it away and certainly won’t support wasteful government spending. They can afford to buy their own country and if need be relocate to avoid paying for your free benefits. As such, the burden always falls upon the middle class which is the exact reason the middle class is shrinking. They simply cannot afford any more free chickens and they can’t afford their own country.
