On Dec. 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, plunging the United States into World War II. President Roosevelt called it "a day that will live in infamy." The American people united to defeat the Japanese. We defeated the Japanese in the fall of 1945. On Sept. 11 , 2001, terrorists attacked the World Trade Center in New York. Again, the American people united to defeat this threat to our democracy and national security. Fast forward to 2016. The Russians attacked our nation by attacking our election system, the core of our democracy. They had access to voter registration records in 21 states. Their goal was to elect Donald Trump who they knew would divide the American people and be more favorable to Russian interests. This was a direct attack on our democracy no less than the attack by the Japanese in 1941 or the 9/11 terrorist attack.
