Scott Pruitt, as administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, is responsible for enforcing environmental laws such as the Clean Water and Clean Air Acts passed by Congress. Water pollution has decreased substantially since the Clean Water Act was passed in 1972, and emissions control programs resulting from the Clean Air Act have significantly improved air quality. Although these findings are encouraging, more work is needed to ensure Americans have access to clean water and air. Instead, Pruitt has done everything in his power to nullify or weaken existing environmental laws.

His latest action, to repeal the Clean Power Plan passed under the Obama administration to cut carbon dioxide emissions from coal fired power plants, is one example of his personal mission to eliminate environmental laws. Pruitt's actions are not based on scientific reasoning or economics. Rather, he is marching to the tune of President Trump who has repeatedly called for eliminating the EPA.

Air and water pollution have a disproportionate effect on lower income families, particularly babies and children who suffer from asthma and other lung problems. As environmental laws become diluted or eliminated under the Pruitt administration, we could expect to see higher rates of lung disease that will affect more people, regardless of income. The impact to our health care system, which is also under attack from the Trump Administration, could be significant. Unfortunately, this will be a price paid by our children and future generations of Americans. Scott Pruitt is not qualified to be Administrator of the EPA and should be removed from office before he does any more damage to our health, or wallets.
