Letter: Dueppen a consistent advocate for schools, students

I write in support of Muri Dueppen for the Carroll County Board of Education, because I believe she has the experience, expertise and energy to be a highly effective Board of Education member. Muri has had a long history with CCPS as both of her children have attended Carroll County schools from kindergarten onwards — one has now graduated and the other attends South Carroll High School. During this time, she has been a consistent advocate for the school system and the needs of students, and has tirelessly attended and spoken at Board of Education and Board of County Commissioner meetings and hearings. Her public statements show her to be rational, analytical and articulate and a solution-seeker. Through this long-term engagement, she has a deep and comprehensive knowledge of the issues facing our schools, and the strengths and weaknesses of CCPS. She has continued this energy into her campaign, visiting every school in the system and holding listening sessions throughout the county to engage with the public.

Muri will be a powerful advocate for all students. She intends to put student success back into the spotlight as recently, discussion of declining enrollments, "empty seats" and facilities has dominated the agenda. Academic improvement, opportunities for all students that go beyond just meeting needs, celebrating student accomplishments, and innovative and collaborative instruction are just some of the themes that she intends to pursue. This will not be possible without an environment in which we can recruit and retain an excellent instructional staff. Competitive compensation and predictable earning pathways for educators, increased opportunities for professional development, and empowering teachers to have a greater voice are also her priorities if she is elected to the board.

Her professional life has well prepared her for the challenge of being a board member and the collaborative, communication and consensus-building skills that it entails. She was a wildlife educator then general manager at a zoo. Subsequently, in the nonprofit sector she had a variety of responsibilities including membership and marketing management, budget development and management and revenue generation. Anyone who has met Muri will know that she is honest, tough, friendly, thorough and fair, with a determination to see projects through to completion.
