Letter: 4-H/FFA in Carroll an amazing program

Did you attend the Carroll County 4-H Fair this year? This is such an amazing program for all students. There is so much to see and learn through 4-H/FFA. As a parent of two children that are part of 4-H and a co-leader of their club, I cannot say enough about this amazing program in our county. To see the children from ages 5 to 18 display and present their projects, they show a great deal of pride. The amount of time that these children spend on their work is countless. From art, crafts, sewing, photography, woodwork, baking and their animals, the children have learned responsibility, confidence, and leadership. The children are questioned about their entries which teaches them public speaking skills. Some of our elementary schools fourth grade classes entered a chicken that were from the embryology program. These schools had eggs in an incubator that eventually hatched. There are rockets, robotics, welding, and engineering technology entries which continues to grow every year. Ag and STEM continue to show how important they are in our classrooms and for our students.

As parents, we encourage our children to give back to their communities. Without the parents taking the children where they need to be, getting up at 5 in the morning to be at the Shipley Arena to clean pens, feed their animals, clean their space, volunteer at the fair and help hold their animals as the children get ready for show; none of it would be possible. So to all the parents, I say thank you for supporting your child/children in the 4-H/FFA program. You can rest for now.

To the public, thank you for the support by buying ice cream, lunch/dinner and attending the paid events. To the volunteers, small businesses and corporations, thank you for your sponsorships, bids on cakes/cookies and market animals. All these types of support help to continue 4-H/FFA programs in our schools, community and in the county.

Most importantly, thank you to all the children that are part of 4-H/FFA in our communities. You are the future of this county, state and country. You are the ones that can continue traditions like making your own soap or learning new technology to grow produce year round. Let's keep advocating to keep Ag in our schools. If your child/children are interested in joining 4-H, please contact the Carroll County Extension Office at 410-386-2760.
