Letters: Carroll residents will March for Life; local roads like 'bumper cars'

Carroll residents participating in March for Life

With science on our side, hundreds of pro-life Carroll citizens are planning to participate in the 46th annual Washington D.C. March for Life on Friday, Jan. 18. This world’s largest pro-life event begins with a noon rally at 12th Street on the National Mall. With the usual expected throng of hundreds of thousands of participants of all ages, the march begins on Constitution Avenue at 1 p.m. and ends at 3 p.m. at the Supreme Court.

Our march theme “Unique From Day One” states “from the moment of fertilization our DNA is present. The unique fingerprint we have, distinguishing us from any other human, is determined by that DNA on day one! Right from the beginning of life, you are becoming the unique, incredible, unrepeatable person that you are! Science is on the side of life! Both when life begins, and the stages of prenatal development are scientific facts. Humanity, and our uniqueness as individuals, begins at day one, at fertilization.” The American College of Pediatricians concurs with the body of scientific evidence that corroborates that a unique human life starts when the sperm and egg bind to each other in a process of fusion of their respective membranes and a single hybrid cell called a zygote, or one-cell embryo, is created.

Thus, we will unceasingly pray, march and work to end abortion by standing and speaking up for the defenseless, voiceless, innocent human beings in their mothers’ wombs who may be at abortion risk, and act so that all pre-born children will have the opportunity to live life to its fullness. With great lament, we remember our 61 million unborn brothers and sisters, created in God’s image, who have been put to death here by gruesome acts of decriminalized induced abortion since the infamous 1973 Supreme Court Roe v. Wade decision.

Let us all pray for the countless women and families experiencing the traumatic psychological, emotional and/or physical aftermath of abortion as evidenced by the women of “Silent No More” who tell of their post-abortion regrets.

Are righteous persons not obligated to defend their fellow humans’ right to life from conception to natural death? If the lives of some are devalued, none of us are safe!

“We hold these truths to be self-evident: That all human beings are created equal and are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, among which is the right to life.”

Driving on the roads like ‘bumper cars’

Have you noticed that drivers on the road today are engaging in more and more risky behavior? It's like “bumper cars” out there.

We were rear-ended twice (in two different cars) in the course of 32 days, while legally stopped on the road.

Nothing illustrates this more than the picture of a white pickup truck on top of a family car whose three children were killed in this accident caused by a drunken driver.

Our roads are not safe. People are not taking their privilege to drive seriously anymore. Something needs to be done. I believe car insurance is part of the problem. It removes a major incentive for the offending driver to change his/her behavior. Car insurance should be used to quickly reimburse the driver whose car was damaged, but the offending driver should have to repay the insurer for the damages he/she caused through a lien on his/her salary for as long as it takes.

Also, Maryland should undertake a series of Public Service Announcements showing the results of taking your eyes or your attention off the road for even a second. Drivers need to be re-educated about road safety and the risks of tail-gating.
