I have played lacrosse my entire life. Against my mother’s wishes, I chose to play in the goal. In lacrosse, the goalie is considered the quarterback, the heart of the team and last line of defense. If you win, you’re the hero. If you lose, you’re the scapegoat. Whether my team won or lost, my mother always told me the same thing: “A goalie is only as good as his defense.” What my mother was trying to instill in me was the concept of teamwork. You need to depend on others in a coordinated effort to achieve a common goal.
