Letters: Congrats on bag ban, keep elections nonpartisan, a challege for Yogi and Boo-Boo, Uber epitome of class inequality

Kudos to Westminster for plastic bag ban

I just saw that Westminster is going to ban plastic bags. I salute those who voted in favor of the ban. Those who voted against, I am sure that after you have experienced what it is like without plastic you will appreciate it as well.

I grew up in Westminster and now live in Chile where this country banned plastic a year ago. I recall many years ago how we all thought plastic was so great. If we all had known then what we know now how adversely it has destroyed our environment. Lessons learned, it's never too late. Now, we need to focus on Styrofoam. Like plastic, it was so cool when it was first invented. Though there are still many practical uses for Styrofoam we need to be prudent in how it is used and for what.

Nonetheless, three cheers for abolishing plastic, we will survive, life will go on. It will be much cleaner too.

Keep city elections non-partisan

Wasn’t I surprised, and then thoroughly disgusted, to read the mean-spirited, highly political attack against one of the persons running for the Westminster City Common Council on Monday’s Carroll County Times Opinion Page. The writer, a member and treasurer of the Carroll County Republican Central Committee, while not even a resident of Westminster, attempted to turn a non-partisan city election into a political election. It was gratifying on Tuesday to see that the CCT’s editor invited the person who had been attacked to provide a response.

It didn’t work. It seems that the Monday Op-Ed may have served to bring out support for the person attacked. Let’s keep our city elections non-partisan/non-political.

A challenge for the cartoon characters in power

It’s been 2 ½ years now since these two cartoon characters, Yogi and Boo-Boo, got in the White House, although they’re still disputing that fact. Remember what it was tht got them in there? Their “red cap” claim to put us, the United States citizens, back on our feet and make us better off that ever before. Now it’s been 2 ½ years of ignorance, immorality and filth never before imaginable. And all they say for 2 2/1 years is, ‘It’s the Dems, it’s the Dems that’s doin’ it.”

Now we know how it works. I have a challenge for Yogi and Boo-Boo. Put the Dems in right now and leave them there for 2 ½ years. Then it won’t be the “Dems that’s doing’ it,” it’ll be thems, Yogi and Boo-Boo, that’s doin’ it. And then we’ll see what it was they promised to do when they got in the White House.

Uber taking advantage of working class

Uber owns nothing but a technology platform. Drivers use their own cars, pay for gas, insurance, maintenance, health, sick time. And if you’re in an accident, forget it, Uber pays nothing. Did the major news report completely on this when Uber went public? No. Uber also takes up to 40% of the fare. Did the media investigate and report on this? No.

This is the epitome of class inequality. Corporations taking advantage of a non-union working class to make shareholders wealthy. The CEO of Uber will get tens of millions of dollars just for taking a company public on the backs of poor drivers. This is the epitome of class inequality and the continuation of corporate monarchy in this country.
