The president certainly ran very long and hard to get nowhere. First, there was the threat of shutdown. Then on national TV, he said he’d be proud to own it. Next, his closest advisers, those wild and crazy Fox TV hosts, egged him on to change course, so he backed out of signing a resolution to fund the government. That was Dec. 20, two days before the shutdown began. He said he wanted to work a deal with “Chuck and Nancy.” They got together on Jan. 9, but he didn’t want to deal and walked out of the negotiations he demanded. Afterward, he said “the Democrats own the shutdown” that earlier, he was oh, so proud to bring about.
