The new year brings us closer to the 2020 election, campaigning for which began moments after polls closed on Nov. 8, 2016. It would not be a surprise to see a couple of dozen Democrats deciding to run for President. And it’s certain that at least a few Republicans will launch challenges to President Trump, assuming he’s still in office next year. The greatest political news story and challenge to Trump in 2019 will be the Mueller report and the president’s reactions. But even as 2019 will be chaotic, I’m hopeful we will see more positive news coming out of Congress than what we saw last year. Incumbents will want to have some accomplishments to run on. We can expect progress on the few issues I’ve already mentioned, as well as many others, such as lower health care and prescription costs, more affirmative steps to address the opioid crisis, genuine immigration reform, and our urgent need to fix the country’s roads and bridges. Even with the unresolved issues from 2018, we may yet have a truly happy New Year.
