Culleton: GOP should separate itself from Party of Trump

Our liar-in-chief, Donald Trump, has spawned a crew of fellow liars. Congressman Trey Gowdy is a notable one. But none can match Trump for bare-faced lying.

Recently, Trump stated that he was the first Republican presidential candidate since Dwight Eisenhower in 1952 to carry Wisconsin. Actually, there have been five such victories since Eisenhower prior to Trump. For example, in 1984 Ronald Reagan carried 49 states including Wisconsin. Trump carried just 30. Reagan earned nearly 59 percent of the popular vote that year. Trump carried just 46.1 percent. In actual numbers, Reagan had a 16 million advantage in popular vote. Trump lost the popular vote by 2.9 million.

Trey Gowdy recently stated that the Mueller Russian probe had gone on for too long and called for the investigation to come to an end. He further stated that the investigation had yielded no results. In fact, the Mueller investigation has gone on for 419 days at this writing. Iran Contra under Reagan lasted 2,420 days. The Bill Clinton Whitewater investigation, which morphed into the Monica Lewinsky scandal, took 2,978 days.

As for results thus far from the Mueller investigation, there has been one conviction of a Dutch national and five guilty pleas. In addition, 14 Russians and three Russian firms have been indicted. The Mueller team have 50 separate issues under investigation. Additional issues 51 and following are being transferred to other investigators. The Mueller team can’t handle them all.

The hugely corrupt and wasteful Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt has finally resigned. The multiple charges against him should, however, be pursued. He should have been fired after the first charges surfaced.

The horror of the mishandling of refugees from Central America continues. Despite an order from President Trump and court orders from a judge, the reunion of parents with their children stolen from them by ICE is almost nonexistent. Perhaps the text on the base of the Statue of Liberty needs to be restated: “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” I fear too many of our younger people think that the statue is an ad for auto insurance.

Trump’s cozying up to Communist and other dictators has encouraged the rise of autocrats around the world. Poland is the latest victim. My spouse has suggested that I write a novel in which the President of the United States is actually a Russian agent tasked with the destruction of the American nation and of democracy worldwide. But I could not write such a novel, titled e.g. “President Comrade” without describing actions that have already been taken by Trump and his supporters. It would be a case of art imitating reality.

Think about it, the ballooning of the national debt, the step-by-step destruction of our social safety net, the destruction of NAFTA, the turning of our allies into enemies and our enemies into allies, the ceding of control of commerce in Asia to China, the abandonment of our defense of South Korea and Japan, the destruction of international trade via a tariff war, the weakening of NATO, the sneering at national heroes like John McCain and George H. W. Bush, the weakening of American companies like Harley Davidson, the blackening of our reputation by jailing asylum seekers and the cruel theft of children from their parents — the list goes on.

Unless the Republican Party separates itself from the Trump Party we will see no relief until January 2019, when the Democrats take over one or both houses of Congress. I dread the damage done in the interim.
