Police to focus on traffic safety over holiday

County law enforcement agencies will conduct high-visibility traffic enforcement beginning Saturday evening to keep roads safe during the Memorial Day weekend.

Maryland State Police troopers, Carroll County Sheriff's Office deputies, and municipal officers will patrol throughout the county and stop vehicles for unsafe driving, according to a news release from the state police Westminster Barrack.

The initiative is aimed at reducing crashes related to aggressive and drunken driving, according to the release.

Statewide efforts will be underway as the unofficial start to the summer travel season begins, according to a release from the state police headquarters. Troopers will conduct saturation patrols, as well as speed, seatbelt, and aggressive and distracted driving enforcement.

The state's Operation SHOWBOAT will concentrate on U.S. 50 from Anne Arundel County to Ocean City, U.S. 301 in Kent and Queen Anne's counties and U.S. 13 in Wicomico, Somerset and Worcester counties, according to the release. Troopers and local police will target unsafe drivers and conduct strict enforcement.
