Save Your Brain Challenge winners announced

The Carroll County Coalition Against Underage Drinking has announced winners in their second annual public service announcement and poster contest, the Save Your Brain Challenge.

The contest, which ran from October to March 6, is a youth-driven, teacher-lead contest that was distributed to all county public schools health teachers in the fall, according to a news release from the organization, with the goal of having students create posters of public service announcements on how young people can save their brains from the harmful effects of underage drinking by using positive messages. Four middle schools and three high schools participated in the contest, winning merchandise totaling $2,800, the release said.

All entries were judged by a volunteer committee of coalition members at the end of March. This year 44 students participated in the competition — twice as many as last year, said Carol Mullen, coordinator of the organization.

The winning poster and PSA entries will be used by the coalition as part of their youth prevention campaign. Students won prizes and awards for their health teacher's classrooms, ranging from technology tablets to stationary exercise equipment, chosen by teachers. They will be presented the first week of June, according to the release.
