Carroll Hospital Center is holding three smoking cessation and lung health events this week in conjunction the American Cancer Society's Great American Smoke Out.

Tuesday, Nov. 18, the hospital will host Date Night: Quit Smoking, a free dinner and talk event geared toward helping partners or couples create plans for quitting, according to Melissa Murdock, a registered nurse and health navigator with the hospital and organizer of the event. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. and run through 8 p.m., with dinner, presentations and an opportunity to try smoking cessation specific acupuncture.

"We will also do a guided imagery specifically for quitting smoking," Murdock said. "All who attend will have the chance to win our grand raffle prize, a gift certificate for treatment at the Tevis Center for Wellness. [Treatment can include] massage, acupuncture, reiki, reflexology or facials."

The event is free — including the dinner — but those interested in attending should call 410-871-7000 no later than 5 p.m. today, Nov. 18 in order or register in advance.

The hospital is recognizing World Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease day from 2 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 19. COPD group illnesses include chronic bronchitis, emphysema and cystic fibrosis, which are exacerbated by smoking, according to Michele Burton, clinical coordinator at the hospital's pulmonary rehabilitation program. The hospital will have vendors providing free information on medications, oxygen machines as well free lung function testing, she said.

The COPD day event is free, but to guarantee an opportunity for lung function testing, Burton said to call 410-857-7000 and pre-register no later than noon on Wednesday.

Lastly, the hospital has joined forces with the Carroll County Health Department for a walk-in, no-registration-needed smoking cessation clinic from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 20, according to Murdock. Individual counseling will be available to help smokers create a plan to quit and vouchers for nicotine replacement products will be available.
