School holiday and closing

Carroll County Public Schools and offices will be closed Monday, Jan. 19, for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Schools will be closed for students Tuesday, Jan. 20, to allow teachers to work on end of marking period items; nonwork day for instructional assistants.


Upcoming volunteer training dates

Volunteer training for Carroll County Public Schools will be held on the following dates.

Jan. 21: Mechanicsville Elementary, 6:15 p.m.

Feb. 3: Mechanicsville, 10:45 a.m.; Runnymede Elementary, 5:15 p.m.

Feb. 5: William Winchester Elementary, 9:30 a.m.; North Carroll High, 6 p.m.

Feb. 11: Ebb Valley Elementary, 6 p.m.; Oklahoma Road Middle, 6:30 p.m.; Manchester Elementary, 7 p.m.

Feb. 12: Freedom Elementary, 6:30 p.m.

Operating budget hearing dates

The following are dates for public presentation, review, and input to the operating budget for the Carroll County Public School System for the 2015-2016 school year.

On Wednesday, Jan. 28, at 6 p.m., FY16 superintendent's proposed operating budget public hearing, with citizen participation, will be held in the Charles I. Ecker Boardroom, Board of Education offices, 125 N. Court St., Westminster. A board work session on the FY 16 budget, with no citizen participation, will be held in the same location immediately following the public hearing.

On Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 7 p.m., a public hearing, with citizen participation, will be held at Winters Mill High School, 560 Gorsuch Road, Westminster.

On Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 3 p.m., a special board of education meeting will be held for the adoption of Board of Education's proposed FY16 budget, in the Charles I. Ecker Boardroom of the Board of Education offices.

Department of Environment accepting applications for student award and internship program

The Maryland Department of the Environment is now accepting applications for the 2015 Environmental Science Student Award and Internship Program. The Award recognizes high school seniors who have excelled in environmental science both inside and outside the classroom. Students who have demonstrated extraordinary leadership and participation in environmental projects in school or their community such as recycling drives, school beautification projects, stream or litter cleanups and other types of environmental projects are encouraged to apply. The grand prize winner will receive a paid internship at MDE during summer 2015. The second-place winner will receive $500 and the third-place winner will receive $250.


The deadline for nominations is May 1; winners will be notified by June 1.
