Eldersburg Safeway closed after fire; no injuries reported

The Safeway in Eldersburg will be closed until further notice after a fire Wednesday evening.

The fire at the Safeway in the 1300 block of Londontown Boulevard started in two Dumpsters outside and extended into the building, causing damage to the exterior of the loading bay and minor heat damage immediately inside, said Bill Rehkopf, a spokesman at the Sykesville-Freedom District Fire Department.

The fire was officially called out at about 5:33 p.m., according to scanner traffic. Firefighters waited until they could confidently confirm there was no more evidence of fire before calling it out, Rehkopf said.

At this time, Rehkopf did not know the cause of the fire, and the Office of the State Fire Marshall was called to conduct an investigation, he said.

The Safeway will be closed until county officials deem it to be safe, Rehkopf said.
