Carroll County Restaurant Week starts Sunday

Diane Hale believes that every good plate of food deserves a good glass of wine.

Hale owns Galloping Goose Vineyards in Hampstead. The vineyard is one of 24 businesses participating in the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce's fourth annual Restaurant Week, which begins Sunday and runs through Aug. 24.

While a vineyard may not seem like a typical participant in a Restaurant Week promotion, Hale said she wanted to be involved this year to showcase her winery and what it can offer.

"People don't realize that we do catered meals, picnics and gatherings for small affairs year round," she said. "People don't know we're here."

Whether it's a glass of wine at Galloping Goose Vineyards, a three-course dinner at Brick Ridge Restaurant or the County Cork Wine Pub featuring produce from local farms, or lunch at J Cafe in Westminster, Carroll County Restaurant Week offers something for everyone and their budget.

Lunch and dinner specials at restaurants range from $8.14 to $30.14.

At Galloping Goose, $20.14 will get you a night in the vineyard with a glass of cabernet sauvignon or rose of cabernet wine with dinner catered by Parkton chef Amelia Lange. Reservations for dinner at Galloping Goose are required.

Brick Ridge Restaurant in Mount Airy has participated in Carroll County's Restaurant Week since the promotion's inception in 2011.

Brick Ridge owner Todd Bricken said he participates to represent the southern end of the county and attract business during a typically slow time of year.

"We definitely do have a lot of first-time guests," he said of Restaurant Week. "Whether they return or not, I'm not sure. But just exposing new customers to our restaurant is helpful."

Brick Ridge, which routinely buys produce from local farmers and stocks wine from area wineries, is offering a three-course dinner during Restaurant Week for $30.14.

Organized by the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce, Restaurant Week is intended to promote local restaurants and provide county residents with an opportunity to try a new restaurant with a fixed price menu.

Restaurants participating this year represent Eldersburg, Hampstead, Mount Airy, Sykesville, Union Bridge and Westminster. The restaurants pay $150 to participate.

Restaurant Week was scheduled for mid-August to drum up business for restaurants during a typically slow period, according to Peggy Soper, Chamber of Commerce director of operations.

Based off of surveys collected from businesses at the end of Restaurant Week, Soper said the event has increased patronage to the restaurants.

Arlene Stecher, owner of The County Cork Wine Pub in Eldersburg, said Restaurant Week "absolutely" brings in customers.

"People really get excited for Restaurant Week," she said.

Stecher, who has participated in Restaurant Week since it began, is offering lunch and dinner specials, priced at $10.14 and $30.14 respectively.

"Prix-fixed menus are financially feasible and it makes people want to do it," she said of Restaurant Week.

At J Cafe, Restaurant Week provides an opportunity to offer new features and specials to see how they're received.

"Nothing [offered for Restaurant Week] is on our current menu," said Nicole Goge, daughter of J Cafe owner Julie Goge.

J Cafe is offering four seasonal sandwich options for a $10.14 lunch special.

While it's hard to determine how many people visit the cafe for the first time specifically for Restaurant Week, Julie Goge said the Restaurant Week specials are always popular.

"Even if they're regulars that we see weekly, they like to participate also," Goge said.
