Longtime Eldersburg resident Trish McCarthy Carroll was named publisher of the Carroll County Times on Friday, replacing Pat Richardson, who had served as publisher for the Times portfolio since April 2007.

Carroll will oversee the daily newspaper, the Carroll County Times, and its website, carrollcountytimes.com, as well as related publications, including the Community Times, the Advocate, Carroll Living, Central Maryland Homes, Purchasing Power coupon books, and Mason-Dixon Marketplace and Shopper.

"Having the opportunity to be the publisher for the newspaper where I've lived for the better part of 20 years, in the community where I've raised my kids, is incredibly exciting," Carroll said.

Carroll most recently served as the Baltimore Sun Media Group's senior vice president for customer engagement. BSMG acquired the Carroll County Times in May.

Timothy E. Ryan, BSMG publisher and CEO, said Carroll is "a superb leader with considerable experience in publishing and business development."

"As a resident of Carroll County, she is well-acquainted with the region and its need for high-quality, local news coverage. I am confident that her expertise and dedication will be evident to staff and will enhance the overall experience for our readers and advertisers alike," he said.

Richardson, meanwhile, has been named publisher of The Virginian-Pilot and president of Pilot Media in Norfolk, Va.

"Carroll County is a special place to live and work, and for the past seven years it has been an honor and a privilege to serve as publisher for the Carroll County Times," she said. "Our readers are passionate about the community and about their newspaper. They definitely keep us on our toes. I'm leaving behind a great team of dedicated professionals that are poised to continue to ensure a great future for the newspaper."

Richardson's leadership provided continued success of the publications, and she played a critical role in the BSMG acquisition, Ryan said.

"Pat has been instrumental in our transition over the past several months. We wish her much success as she pursues new opportunities," he said.

Mike McMullin, president of the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce, said Richardson has been a great supporter of the local business community. Richardson has also contributed to the chamber by encouraging members to participate in events, attending meetings and providing leadership.

McMullin said he's enjoyed working with her and hopes her successor will be as engaged in the community as Richardson.

"Pat will be missed," he said.

Carroll said she's hoping to follow in Richardson's footsteps and forge strong relationships with business and community leaders in the county.

Regarding the newspaper industry, Carroll said she began working at The Baltimore Sun in 1989 and has worked in practically every division of the industry since.

"When you work in this business, it gets in your blood," Carroll said. "I made a point to learn all aspects of the business."

She worked at The Baltimore Sun in a variety of positions in advertising, operations and circulation before leaving for a position as director of operations at The Olympian, a McClatchy-owned newspaper in Washington state.

She returned to The Sun in 2008 as senior vice president of targeted media, serving as president of Patuxent Publishing, located in Howard County, and president of Homestead Publishing, located in Harford County. In that position, she was responsible for BSMG's community newspapers, magazines, custom content, telephone directories, niche publications and websites.

Carroll graduated from what is now Loyola University Maryland with a bachelor of business administration in management.

Richardson had also been serving as publisher of Capital Gazette Communications in Annapolis and its daily newspaper, The Capital, which was also acquired by BSMG in May. Tim Thomas was named the new publisher of that group Friday.
