Maryland elections board approves Silver Run polling site change

The Maryland State Board of Elections has given final approval to the county Board of Elections' polling place change for voters in the Silver Run area.

In November, voters assigned to Election District 3, Precinct 1, will report to Pleasant Valley Community Fire Company, at 2030 S. Pleasant Valley Road in Westminster.

The move was necessitated by the closure of the precinct's previous polling place, Charles Carroll Elementary School. The State Board of Education upheld the county Board of Education's decision to close the school and two others last week.

An earlier plan announced by the county elections board sent Charles Carroll voters to Ebb Valley Elementary, a nearly 20-minute drive from Charles Carroll Elementary. After hearing criticism from the community for the change, as well as pleas from County Commissioner Stephen Wantz, Pleasant Valley fire company President Michael Stewart and state Del. Haven Shoemaker to consider the Pleasant Valley fire hall, the board decided on June 15 to swap the Ebb Valley site for the Pleasant Valley one.

The Maryland State Board of Elections gave its final approval to the plan on Thursday, June 30.

Voters at New Windsor Middle School and North Carroll High School were also relocated after the closure of those schools. North Carroll High voters will report to Shiloh Middle School, at 3675 Willow St. in Hampstead, and New Windsor Middle voters will now vote at Old New Windsor School, at 1100 Green Valley Road in New Windsor.

Early and absentee voting will still be available to all county voters. Voters affected by the polling place change will be notified with a voter notification card and a sample ballot before the Nov. 8 general election.
