College funding options presented at library
This May 11, join Patrick Barry, Waddell & Reed Financial Advisor, at his discussion about the financial options that people have to attend college at the Eldersburg branch of the Carroll County public Library.
Siew-Sim Cheah, Waddell & Reed Financial Advisor, explained through an email conversation that Waddell & Reed is a wealth management firm founded in 1937 in Kansas City, Kansas that offers various investment tools to help families pay for higher education as well as other financial goals.
Cheah added that the idea to have this discussion at the library came from Patrick Barry. He was previously a teacher in Carroll County.
He said that Barry reached out to the Carroll County Public Library about his desire to offer education workshops to the community.
Throughout this event, they will be discussing FASFA and academic and merit based scholarships. They will have a discussion about the pros and cons of various investment opportunities that can be helpful as students and parents pursue funding for a college education.
Cheah explained that the cost of college has inflated an average of just under 6 percent annually since 1989.
"With the cost steadily increasing, families need to be aware of the resources available to them as parents and as students so they may better equip themselves and plan appropriately," stated Cheah. "If one family is able to walk away with information they never knew before and are able to better plan for the impending college costs, then I'll consider the workshop a success."
Barry also explained that it is very important that families have a plan. He stressed that the earlier the family starts to plan, the better it is. He also said that each student has to be sure that college is the right path for the career they decide on.
He also emphasized that students need to evaluate the type of school they are hoping to attend. He said that for some people, a community college is a great way to take general education classes at a lower cost.
Also, he said that students should not be afraid to ask for more help if the financial aid award does not satisfy their needs.
"The purpose of the College Funding workshop is to teach parents and rising juniors and seniors about the resources available to help them pay for college," stated Cheah. "Patrick believes the more we know, the better decisions we can make."
Patrick Barry is a Financial Advisor through Waddell & Reed in York, Pennsyvlania and Siew-Sim Cheah is with Waddell & Reed in Owings Mills.
The program begins at 7 p.m. All attendees need to register today. For more information about this and other events, please contact the library at 410-386-4488. The Eldersburg branch is located at 6400 W Hemlock Dr, Sykesville.
