A Mount Airy home is a total loss and two firefighters were taken to the hospital after a house fire broke out in the 1900 block of S. Main Street.

The house fire was "fully involved," said fire company spokesman Doug Alexander.

"I haven't seen a fire like this in quite a while," he said.

The house will be a total loss as a result of the fire, Alexander said. Fire companies were called to the residence around 5:30 p.m., and the fire was under control at 7:40 p.m.

The firefighters were heading to the hospital for a check-up, Alexander said, adding they may have over-exerted themselves battling the blaze. He did not expect them to be kept overnight.

A mother and her two teenage sons who were at the residence have been accounted for, Alexander said.

The Mount Airy fire company was assisted by fire companies from New Market, Green Valley and Urbana in Frederick County, Laytonsville, Damascus and Clarksburg in Montgomery County, Lisbon in Howard and Winfield in Carroll, Alexander said.

Alexander said around 9:10 p.m. the companies were on scene as part of a cleanup effort but hoped to leave within the next 30 minutes.
