Keymar church having Baskets & Bags Bingo at New Midway

Mt. Zion Haugh's Lutheran Church, in Keymar, will hold a Baskets & Bags Bingo Oct. 3 at New Midway Fire Hall, with doors opening at 5 p.m. and games beginning at 7.

"It's usually a fun evening," said Cindy Shelby, who has been organizing the annual event for 13 years. "It's the only fundraiser our church does" outside the church, she said.

Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door for 20 regular games. There will also be two special games, two raffles, a 50/50 and door prizes.

The bingo has become "more of a social event" than a fundraiser since the downturn in the economy, Shelby said. A lot of people come for fellowship, including parishioners who bring their friends and neighbors.

The prizes include a variety of Longaberger products, including some pottery and wrought-iron pieces, and Thirty-One bags. "We used to do all baskets but now we kind of do half and half," Shelby said.

All prizes, including the bags, will be filled with goodies, she said.

The fire company will be selling hot food from the kitchen, and there will be a bake table.

Proceeds from the event help benefit various projects at the more-than-250-year-old church.

The event is not about making a lot of money, Shelby said. What is raised is given back to the community in some way. Sometimes it goes to support the Bible school, which charges no fees, or the money may be donated to a family in need, she said. One year, it paid for care packages that were sent to soldiers.

"We try to put it to good use," she said.

The fire hall is at 12012 Woodsboro Pike, New Midway.

There will be a minimum of 70 to 80 prizes with 40 paid players in attendance. Prize giveaways will be adjusted if there are fewer than 40 people attending.

Food and refreshments will be available for sale, and all proceeds benefit the fire company.
