County sets household hazardous waste disposal date

Carroll County residents looking to dispose of hazardous household waste will have an opportunity to do so next month at the county's Household Hazardous Waste Fall Cleanup.

The event, scheduled for Oct. 22 at the Carroll County Vehicle Maintenance Facility, at 1250 Old Meadow Branch Road in Westminster, will allow residents to safely get rid of dangerous household items and shred private nonbusiness documents.

According to a county news release, accepted items include: gasoline or gas/oil mix, kerosene, oil-based paints and thinners, solvents, stains, sealants, pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, photographic and pool chemicals, household cleaners, compact fluorescent light bulbs, fluorescent light tubes, and nickel-cadmium and NIMH batteries.

Latex paint, medications, rechargeable, household and vehicle batteries, explosives, ammunition, fireworks, medical and biohazard waste, radioactive material, compressed gas tanks and cylinders, asbestos, motor oil, antifreeze, and industrial or commercial waste will not be accepted, according to the release.

Documents for shredding are limited to a maximum of three boxes or bags per resident, the release said.

The event is sponsored by Carroll County Government Recycling Operations and will run from 8 a.m. until about noon.
