Lion Myron Horn introduced Michael Spaulding, recently appointed as chief of the Sykesville Police Department. Spaulding had retired from the Maryland State Police. The Lions welcomed him to the area and wished him well in his new position as the head law enforcement officer in Sykesville. The Freedom District Lions Club financially supports the Sykesville Police Department's Junior CSI camp for area youths that will be co-sponsored this year by Sykesville Middle School. The educational event will be held in September.

Immediate Past President Bob Bastress surprised President Gary Buchman by presenting him with a Melvin Jones Fellow plaque. Being selected as a Melvin Jones Fellow is the highest form of recognition for humanitarian service that Lions Clubs International presents. Buchman served as the cabinet treasurer for District 22W of Lions International as well as continuing to be a very active member of his home club.
