Participants are needed for the 15th annual Carroll County Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty on Sunday, April 17. Registration begins at 1:30 p.m. and the walk kicks off from St. Paul's United Methodist Church in New Windsor at 2 p.m.

"The route is relatively level and about five miles long. There's a nice rest stop along the way," said Jim Benedict, the walk's coordinator.

Benedict, a Union Bridge Church of the Brethren pastor, said walk participants raise funds to fight community hunger. He said this year marks the 70th anniversary of CROP walks throughout the country. Walkers solicit sponsors to raise money for relief abroad through the nondenominational Church World Service, which provides worldwide emergency aid, long-term self-help projects and assistance to refugees.

During last year's walk, 85 people from 14 area churches and organizations raised $12,367. Benedict said 25 percent of the money was returned to local causes, including Shepherd's Staff, Carroll County Food Sunday and Access Carroll.

Benedict encourages walkers to show up and make a small donation. He said they can also register at www.crophungerwalk.org. For more information, call 410-775-2717.
