Carroll County Cloggers sponsors Spring Stomp

Seventeen-year-old Elise McKechnie loves to dance and has been a member of the Carroll County Cloggers for five years. She's eager to participate in the club's annual Mason Dixon Spring Stomp 2015 workshop on Saturday at The Portico of St. John Catholic Church in Westminster.

"I can't wait to learn new and exciting dances," McKechnie said.

Registration for the workshop will begin at 8 a.m on Saturday. Dancing will continue throughout the day. A beginner's dance class will be taught from 10 to 11 a.m. for $5. Shoes will not be provided.

"We'll be teaching in two halls," said Lynn Grassi, co-chairwoman of the Carroll County Cloggers workshop. "Two dances will be taught at the same time, totaling 14 dances."

The club will also sponsor a dance for all participants from 7 to 9 p.m. Barry Welch, a national instructor from Fresno, Calif., will teach and call the dances during the event. Six instructors from Maryland, Virginia, and New Jersey will also teach at the workshop.

Grassi said clogging is a percussive dance that pulls its style from several cultures. The group is noncompetitive and performs around the community.

"We use jingle taps," said Diane Gehret, co-chairwoman of the event. "They're much like tap shoes, but two pieces of metal are attached to the shoes to make an extra jingle sound."

Gehret said organizers are expecting 120 people from 18 clogging clubs to attend the workshop.

Mark Wilson, who travels from Pennsylvania to participate in the Carroll County club, has been clogging for almost 36 years. Wilson said he is excited for the workshop because he will have access to instructors from four areas.

"Clogging is not static," Wilson said. "It's changing all the time. Every time you have someone new, you learn something new."

Grassi said clogging is good for anyone at any age.

"We have club members ranging from their teens to their 70s," Grassi said. "It's phenomenal exercise."
