Carroll County government has declared a local State of Emergency due to the severity of winter storm Jonas and the current blizzard conditions, asking people to stay off county roads.
County Commissioner President Stephen Wantz declared the state of emergency beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday. The order authorizes agencies to activate the county's Emergency Operations Plans and take such actions as are necessary to protect lives during this emergency.
In order to protect the lives of citizens and facilitate the movement of emergency vehicles, all individuals are requested to refrain from operating vehicles on any county-owned or maintained road until the state of emergency is terminated by Commissioner Wantz.
"I am activating the Local State of Emergency because the winter storm is challenging our public resources," Wantz said in a prepared statement. "Our utmost concern is for the safety and well-being of the citizens of Carroll County and this emergency declaration will facilitate our response and the deployment and sharing of resources. We ask our citizens to stay home and stay off the roads during this winter storm."
County officials emphasized that in the case of an emergency; citizens should call 911 and not travel in personal vehicles.
