Ten Baltimore County Office of Permits, Approvals and Inspections employees — including two from Carroll County — claimed a $150,000 prize in the Jan. 9 world-record Powerball jackpot drawing. The group purchased its winning ticket at Cranberry Liquors at 405 N. Center St. in Westminster.

The group, who chose to remain anonymous, dubbed themselves "The Terrific Ten," and have pooled their money to buy tickets for jackpot games for 15 years, according to a Maryland lottery news release. The players hail from seven Maryland communities — Baldwin, Baltimore, Fallston, Finksburg, Kingsville, Reisterstown and Westminster. One player lives in Delaware.

"When I first looked at the ticket, I saw three numbers," said the leader of the group in a Maryland Lottery press release. "I had to get my glasses, and my daughter was asking me if we won, and I said, 'I don't know!' "

It's by far the largest amount The Terrific Ten has ever won, according to the release. One of the group's $2 tickets matched four numbers plus the red Powerball, giving them a $50,000 prize in the drawing. That amount tripled to $150,000 because they paid an additional $1 to add the Power Play option to the ticket. After taxes, each member of the group will receive $9,937.50.

According to the release, the group's previous top prize was $150. Members of the group said they intend to use the money to pay bills and go on vacations. One Powerball player said he wanted to give money to his grandson and buy a new couch for his son, who recently moved into a new home.

Maryland Lottery officials said the group was one of three $150,000-winning tickets sold in Maryland for the Jan. 9 Powerball drawing. There were also seven Marylanders who won $50,000 and three who claimed a $1 million prize.

According to the Associated Press, those $1 million tickets were sold at a Wawa on Urbana Pike in Frederick, an Amoco on Walker Mill Road in Capitol Heights and a 7-Eleven on Annapolis Road in Bladensburg.

The unprecedented $1.6 billion Powerball jackpot from Wednesday's drawing will be split three ways. The winners' identities were still a mystery as of 6 p.m. Thursday, but the winning tickets were sold in Florida, Tennessee and a Los Angeles suburb. The numbers drawn Wednesday night are 4-8-19-27-34 and Powerball 10.
