A smoke alarm awoke the family at about 2:24 a.m. Thursday, and they were able to safely escape. It's unclear what started the fire, according to the fire marshal.

The four occupants of the home were displaced, and they are being helped by Red Cross, said Oliver Alkire, spokesman with the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

Arriving units saw heavy fire from the rear of the house, Dayhoff said, and it extended into the roof and attic.
