Dr. Arnold "Skip" Amass, a well-known fundraiser for many nonprofits in Carroll County, has been named the Outstanding Citizen for 2014 by the Westminster Rotary Club.
This was the 56th time the club has recognized a local citizen who exemplifies the Rotary motto: "Service Above Self."
The club honored Amass Nov. 5 at Johanssons Dining House in Westminster.
Amass was cited for his long career as a pharmacist at local drugstores and later at the National Security Agency, and especially for his establishment of the pharmacy at the then-new Carroll County General Hospital. His volunteer efforts to raise funds for the American Cancer Society, Boy Scouts, McDaniel College, Westminster fire company, The Shepherd's Staff, Carroll Hospice, Carroll Community College Foundation and the Westminster Rotary Club, and especially for raising funds for the cancer society's Hope Lodge in Baltimore, were described by Lee Primm and William Gavin during a ceremony that concluded with the presentation of the citation by club President Nora Drury.
A tree will also be planted in Amass' honor at the Carroll County Farm Museum.
