The Shepherd's Purse Alpacas farm will host a unique holiday event on Saturday, with an opportunity for some hands-on time with these woolly South American cousins of the llama.
The farm, owned by Cindy and Wayne Aldrich, will welcome visitors from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday to interact with their 36-alpaca herd as a form of holiday stress relief, noting research indicating contact with animals can be calming. Light refreshments will be served, and visitors will receive a free alpaca finger puppet.
The Shepherd's Purse Alpacas is at 7971 Bennett Branch Road in Mount Airy.
Despite the forecast calling for foul winter weather, Wayne Aldrich said people can still come out if they wish to brave the elements.
"We'll be here and the alpacas will be here if people want to come out," he said.
A second event will also be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Christmas Eve, Saturday, Dec. 24.
