Orthopaedist Samuel Matz, M.D., of Carroll Health Group Orthopaedics, was recently honored with the Presidential Award of Merit from the Maryland Athletic Trainers' Association.
The award recognizes an organization or non-athletic trainer medical or allied health medical provider for their efforts in promoting the profession of athletic training. This can be done through ongoing efforts that raise awareness about athletic trainers or activities that highlight the profession.
Dr. Matz received the award for his long-standing support of and outstanding efforts in promoting the valuable service athletic trainers provide student athletes and encouraging appropriate ways to utilize their skills. He has worked in conjunction with athletic trainers at McDaniel College as well as members of the Board of Education of Carroll County to raise funding and support to enable athletic trainers to be available in high schools in Carroll County. In addition, he advocated for athletic trainers to be licensed by the state, before this became a requirement. He also played a pivotal role in advancing the sports medicine program at Bryn Mawr School.
