An 85-year-old Mount Airy man died Friday after being submerged in his vehicle in a swimming pool at his residence, according to a news release from the Carroll County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies were notified at 6:03 p.m. and responded to the 6000 block of Runkles Road in Mount Airy to a report of a GMC Yukon in a swimming pool, according to police.
Upon arrival, deputies found the victim, Marvel Freund, submerged within his SUV in the pool, police said. According to police, he was removed by family members and neighbors before being pronounced dead by medics.
A family member of Freund returned home to find the SUV fully submerged in the swimming pool and the house and garage to be severely damaged, police said.
Police said it appears that Freund accidentally drove into the pool while backing his vehicle into the garage.
Cpl. Jon Light, a Sheriff's Office spokesman, said no one else was injured during the incident.
The investigation is ongoing and the cause has not yet been determined, Light said. Those with information about the incident are asked to contact Detective Steven Rager at 410-386-2577.
