Man sentenced to more than 13 years for gas station robberies

A Mount Airy man was sentenced to 13 years and 8 months in prison by a federal judge Wednesday for committing a series of robberies in Carroll and surrounding counties.

Joshua Payne, 21, entered a plea agreement to four counts of robbery and one count of using a firearm during a robbery, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office in Baltimore.

Between Nov. 27 and Dec. 1, 2013, Payne pointed a handgun, which he stole from his brother, at the cashiers of three gas stations and stole hundreds of dollars from the registers, according to the release.

The robberies occurred at the Shell gas station on Lakeview Drive in Mount Airy, the High's gas station on Md. 32 in Eldersburg and the BP gas station on Frederick Road in Lisbon, according to the release.

On Nov. 29, Payne pointed a gun at a driver and stole the driver's car and cellphones, according to the release.

On Dec. 6, Payne returned to the Shell in Mount Airy and threatened the cashier with a long kitchen knife, according to the release.

After his sentence, Payne will be placed under three years of supervision, according to the release.
