A Union Bridge man is in custody after police say he took his girlfriend hostage at knifepoint in the Union Bridge Community Center parking lot.

Patrons of the community center and a nearby park were directed to take shelter in the center, at 4770 Ladiesburg Road in Union Bridge, while Carroll County Sheriff's Office deputies worked for about an hour to resolve the situation, Sgt. Phil Lawrence said.

The man, who Lawrence said had an 8-inch knife, was identified as a 22-year-old resident of Union Bridge.

The incident was resolved without any injuries just before 9 p.m., Lawrence said, and the man was taken into custody and transported to Carroll Hospital, where he remained as of 7 p.m. Saturday evening.

Charges are pending, Lawrence said.
