A Westminster man is charged with assault and reckless endangerment for allegedly hitting a man and threatening him with a butcher knife Thursday night.

Gregory Allen Costley Sr., 65, of the 100 block of E. Main St., is being held at the Carroll County Detention Center on $75,000 bond, according to electronic court files.

A Westminster Police Department officer responded to an apartment complex in the 100 block of E. Main St. about 8:20 p.m. Thursday for a report of an argument and heard arguing and fighting on the second floor, according to charging documents.

When the officer arrived on the second floor, he saw Costley exiting the apartment holding a butcher knife and advancing toward a second individual, according to the documents.

The officer gained control of the knife and detained Costley.

The alleged victim told the officer he arrived home and was walking up the stairs when Costley punched him in the face several times and then went to get the knife after the victim fought back, according to the documents.

Costley was arrested and transported to the detention center's central booking unit for processing, according to the documents.
