A grand jury indicted a Westminster woman Thursday, Dec. 1 after she allegedly stole about $40,000 from a Mount Airy company.
Samantha Beary, 30, of the 400 block of Avenel Circle, is charged with one count of theft-scheme between $10,000 to under $100,000, and one count of obtaining goods or money through forgery. She was arrested Friday, Dec. 2 and held on $38,000 bond. She was released after 10 percent of the bond was put up, according to electronic court records.
Beary allegedly wrote more than 80 checks to herself from T.E.M. Trucking after being hired by the company in March, according to the company's office manager, Dawn Burdette.
Burdette said Beary apparently started writing the checks in May and postdated them to March. She allegedly cashed the checks between May and July, and ended up stealing up to $40,000 from the company, Burdette said.
Burdette alleges that she noticed the missing money when she and another new employee went through the company's books and realized the Quickbooks done by Beary were messed up. Burdette said Beary allegedly fixed the company's books so they matched the checks.
