A Westminster man was arrested Sunday, Nov. 4, after he allegedly struck and threatened a woman during an altercation.
Angel Gustavo Ortiz Aponte, 31, of the 3900 block of Littlestown Pike, was charged with one count each of first- and second-degree assault. He is being held without bail following a Monday bail review, according to electronic court records.
According to the statement of charges, a woman told Maryland State Police she and Aponte had been arguing on and off all day. She was a passenger in a vehicle and he was driving when the conflict became physical and he struck her in the back of the head with a fist multiple times, she said.
Later, they pulled over and Aponte stopped the car in a location he was familiar with where he pulled her from the vehicle and to the ground. He then grabbed her neck, causing trouble breathing, she said. He held a box cutter taken from the vehicle against her neck and threatened her, she told police, according to the statement.
She said he then threw her back into the vehicle, where her head struck the console. She attempted to leave the vehicle multiple times on the drive to his destination, but was unsuccessful, she told police, according to the statement.
Police observed red marks on her neck consistent with fingernails scratches as well as red marks and scrapes on her arms, and a laceration on her lip according to the statement.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Nov. 28.
