A Maryland man and woman were arrested Sunday after the woman allegedly shoplifted items from Kohl's and they attempted to flee in a van that was previously reported stolen.
Kendall Ervin McClean, 47, of Randallstown and Octavia Shere Hazelton, 26, of Baltimore were arrested Sunday.
McClean was charged with one count each of possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of paraphernalia, and unlawful taking of a motor vehicle. Hazelton was charged with the above in addition to theft between $1,500 and $25,000. McClean was being held on $6,000 bail as of 5:30 p.m. Monday and Hazelton was released on her own recognizance, according to Carroll County Central Booking records.
According to the statement of probable cause/ statement of charges, the Westminster Police Department was alerted to a reported theft in progress at Kohl’s in the 800 block of Market Street just before 8 p.m. Sunday. Officers responded and took up positions near exits to the building.
An officer observed Hazelton running out of the building. She was apprehended while entering a gray Dodge van occupied by McClean. Officers observed Kohl’s merchandise inside the van, according to the statement.
A check of the van’s registration found that it had been reported stolen in Baltimore two days before, according to the statement.
Police placed Hazelton and McClean under arrest and searched their person’s and the interior of the van. In addition to allegedly stolen merchandise, the van contained suspected crack cocaine and smoking devices and a wallet belonging to the owner of the vehicle. Police located suspected crack cocaine on Hazelton’s person and suspected heroin on McClean’s person, according to the statement.
Hazelton did not respond to a call for comment as of 5:30 p.m. Monday.
