More than one Carroll resident reported receiving a scam call on Aug. 2 from a caller claiming to be from the IRS.
The call appeared to come from the number 646-682-0913. The caller told recipients they owed thousands of dollars to the IRS and threatened to arrest them if they did not pay within 24 hours, according to a news release from the Carroll County State’s Attorney’s Office.
The State’s Attorney’s Office reminds residents that legitimate IRS communication will come via mail. If residents have questions for the IRS, they can be reached at 800-829-1040.
Personal information and money should not be given out over the phone.
Those who receive scam calls should report them to the Federal Trade Commission Complaint Assistant at www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov.
“If you have given money as a result of this scam, please contact your local law enforcement agency,” according to the release.
