A Westminster man was arrested Thursday after he allegedly sprayed a Walmart loss prevention manager with pepper spray after being confronted about theft.
Kyle Nathan Begly, 31, of no fixed address, was charged with eight counts including second-degree assault, use of pepper mace with the intent to injure and malicious destruction of property less than $1,000. He is being held on $5,000, according to Carroll County Central Booking records.
According to the statement of probable cause, Carroll County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the Walmart super center in the 6400 block of Ridge Road in Eldersburg for a reported assault.
Deputies responded to find a store loss prevention manager, who told the deputy he had confronted Begly about suspected theft and Begly sprayed him in the face.
The manager said he observed Begly on closed-circuit footage going through self-checkout without paying for items he had attempted to conceal. Two managers attempted to confront Begly after he exited the store. Begly sprayed one manager with pepper spray before placing the stolen items down and leaving, the manager told police, according to the statement.
While a deputy was examining the vehicle Begly was reported to have arrived in, the deputy saw a man matching Begly’s description walking in the nearby shopping center. Upon seeing deputies, Begly quickly turned around and stepped into another store in what deputies believed to be an attempt to avoid detection, according to the statement.
Deputies entered the store and arrested Begly without incident. A can of Mace pepper spray and a Walmart receipt was located on his person during a search. The manager positively identified the arrested man as the man from the earlier incident, according to the statement.
Begly possessed identification under a different name which he said was his correct identity. Police identified the man as Begly through MVA records and previous booking photos which showed his tattoos. He was found to have current warrants in Carroll and Baltimore counties, according to the statement.
