Maryland State Police are investigating a possible murder-suicide near Union Bridge after receiving a request to check the welfare of a married couple Sunday.
Troopers from the Frederick Barrack responded to the 8700 block of Green Valley Road shortly before 11 a.m., according to a news release.
Elliott B. Cheston, 71, was pronounced dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene. His wife, Cornelia M. Cheston, 72, was also pronounced dead at the scene. She sustained an apparent gunshot wound.
Police had received a call from Cornelia Cheston's daughter to check on her mother and step-father because she had not spoken with them since Thursday, according to the release.
Troopers found the house locked but could see that one of the couple's dogs was dead in the downstairs area, according to the release.
Police forced their way into the residence and discovered the couple, according to the release. The Maryland State Fire Marshal was contacted because it was learned Elliott Cheston May have kept legally-obtained explosives in the house. Frederick County Animal Control was called to dispose of three deceased dogs found at the residence.
