The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene released data on intoxication related deaths in the first three quarters of 2016. There were 32 drug and alcohol overdose fatalities in Carroll County during that time. The chart below shows the intoxication related deaths in Carroll County for the first three quarters of each year since 2007. The DHMH may count a single death in multiple categories if it involved more than one type of drug. Fentanyl related deaths more than doubled in the first nine months of 2016 compared to the same time last year. Cocaine and prescription opioid related deaths were down slightly compared to 2015. The chart below shows the intoxication related deaths in Maryland for the first three quarters of each year. Statewide, all five of the drug types listed in the chart saw increases in intoxication related deaths compared to the first three quarters of 2015. There were more than 700 fentanyl related deaths in the state through the third quarter of 2016, up from less than 200 last year.
