Remembering Pete Seeger -- A Musical Tribute

Common Ground on the Hill will look back at one the festival's most prominent supporters Monday, June 30, and July 7. Following keynote speeches at 8 p.m., "Remembering Pete Seeger -- a Musical Tribute" will take place in Alumni Hall Theater.

Seeger, a legendary folk singer and activist who died earlier this year, joined the advisory board of Common Ground on the Hill in their inaugural year, and returned to Westminster to perform at two of the subsequent festivals.

Common Ground Executive Director Walt Michael said he first met Seeger while living in the Hudson River Valley, the town next to the musician.

"One of the most special things about him was that he is world-renowned, but he's also very much in the community," Michael said. "You would often see him in the schools singing with kids or walking along the sidewalk to the post office. He was a normal guy and a wonderful man."

Michael said instead of being a traditional concert, the musical tributes will be held as musician-led sing-alongs.

"Pete loved to sing, and he loved to get people singing," Michael said. "We've selected 10 different performers to lead one song each, so it will be quite a rich evening; it's not a quote-unquote performance, but it's them leading the audience in performance of Pete Seeger songs."
