The Carroll County Association for Family and Community Education recently announced that Bhavneet Athwal, Emily Rae Davis and Michelle Hamna Mahmood each won a 2014 FCE $750 scholarship.

Athwal, a straight-A student and member of the National Honor Society, has served as a peer tutor at North Carroll Middle and Manchester Valley High schools. A 2014 graduate of Manchester Valley, she is a bowling team member and has made blankets for Project Linus. Her volunteer experience includes the Carroll County Public Library Summer Reading Program and Manchester Elementary and Ebb Valley Elementary School Carnival. She enjoys playing badminton, reading, cross-stitching and writing. She will attend Stevenson University, majoring in biotechnology.

Davis is a 2014 graduate of Liberty High School. Her memberships include the National Honor Society, Photo Club, Marching Band Color Guard and Indoor Color Guard flag leader. She has more than 400 service hours at Day's End Farm Horse Rescue, Piney Run Nature Center and Eldersburg Veterinary Hospital, where she will serve an internship. She has played Optimist Softball and enjoys color guard, reading and dance. She will attend the University of Maryland, College Park, majoring in animal science.

Mahmood is a 2014 graduate of Westminster High School. Her memberships include the National Honor Society, S.T.E.M. Club, Multicultural Club, and Speech and Debate. She also served as freshman class president. She has participated in Relay for Life and Adopt a Family. She was youths president at her community mosque. She has tutored math and science at Carroll Community College. She enjoys basketball, both as a player and coach; this includes coaching her sister. She will attend McDaniel College, majoring in biochemistry.
