Brush fire started by discarded burning paper spreads to Westminster home

A discarded burning piece of paper started a brush fire that spread to the outside of a home in Westminster Friday evening, according to a release from the Maryland State Fire Marshall.

A family member discarded a lit piece of paper out of a bedroom window that ignited a bush on fire outside the home in the unit block of Landau Drive in Westminster around 6:40 p.m. Friday, according to the release.

The family had extinguished the fire prior to the arrival of the fire department. But there was still about $1,000 worth of damage to the structure, according to the release.
