Baltimore Gas and Electric is warning about a scam where customers are contacted by telephone and told that their service is scheduled to be terminated unless the customers make a payment by purchasing a "Green Dot" Visa credit card.

The funds are not used to pay a BGE bill, according to a news release, and customers should not provide any payment or financial information in response to these calls.

Utility companies nationwide have seen an increase in customers contacted as a part of this scam, according to the release.

If a customer has been contacted as a part of the scam, they should contact local law enforcement and the BGE Customer Contact Center at (800) 685-0123, according to the release.
