The wait is over. The White House Historical Association has released its annual holiday ornament, and The Republican Women's Club of Taneytown has them for sale once again.
The 2012 White House Christmas ornament honors the 27th president of the United States, William Howard Taft. According to The White House Historical Association, "President Taft introduced the automobile to White House transportation in 1909, breaking a long presidential tradition of reliance on horse-drawn vehicles.
"The ornament depicts President and Mrs. Taft en route to deliver Christmas presents. They are seated behind chauffeur George H. Robinson in the White Motor Company's Model M, a seven passenger steam powered touring car embellished with the Great Seal of the United States on the doors." The ornament is a highly polished brass with a coating of nickel finished in 24-karat gold.
"The ornaments are collectables and they can be given as gifts," said Fairy Flickinger, the Republican Women's Club of Taneytown Fundraising chairwoman.
The ornaments are being sold for $22 each. They may be purchased at Hometown Gifts at Taneytown, located at the Taneytown Shopping Center, 520 E. Baltimore St., Taneytown and the 140 Village Shopping Center, 531 Jermor Lane, No. A, Westminster.
Ornaments will also be available at the club's annual Fundraising Banquet which is being held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, at the Taneytown Firemen's Activities Building, located at 46 Memorial Drive, Taneytown.
The Ladies Auxiliary will be serving a family style dinner of turkey and oysters with all the trimmings which will be followed by entertainment by the group, BYHEART.
"The banquet is open to everyone," Flickinger said. The cost for the evening of food and fun is $30.
Reservations should be made no later than Wednesday, Oct. 17.
For more information or to purchase ornaments or make reservations contact Fairy at 410-756-2245 or Marion at 410-346-7380.
"Proceeds will go to needy families in the area," said Flickinger.
