Simensky, WMHS graduate, receives music scholarship

Amanda Simensky, of Westminster, a 2009 Winters Mill High School graduate, received the Brandon E. Bitner Memorial Scholarship at Susquehanna University for 2012-2013.

Simensky is a senior violin performance major. She also spent the summer attending the Brevard Music Center in North Carolina, studying with faculty and renowned guest artists.

The scholarship received a $5,000 donation from Madonna's concert tour promote Live Nation MTours. The donation resulted from the family giving permission to use a photograph of their son on Madonna's MDNA world tour, as part of a video montage against bullying. Bitner, 14 years old, committed suicide in November 2010, having endured repeated bullying from peers.

The family requested the donation be made to the scholarship at Susquehanna as Bitner was an accomplished violinist who played in what was formerly the university's preparatory program's youth orchestra.
