Mount Airy begins search for new town administrator

The Town of Mount Airy is searching for a new town administrator to fill the role of Monika Weierbach, who will be retiring after working for the town for over two decades.

Weierbach started as the town planner in 1996 and served until 2005, according to the town’s human resources department. When the town created the town administrator position in 2006, Weierbach was chosen from the pool of candidates and returned to employment with the town.

The job opening for a Town Administrator was posted to the Mount Airy website Monday.

Applications for the position close May 3. After that, Mayor Patrick Rockinberg will make a recommendation to the town council, who will decide who to hire.

The mayor will form his recommendation based on the review of a panel consisting of himself, Weierbach, Town Engineer Barney Quinn, Human Resources Director Holly McCleary, Community Planning Administrator John Breeding, Town Attorney Tom McCarron, and Jay Gullo from outside the town administration who agreed to serve on the committee.

“We will be reviewing resumes and setting up interviews in the middle of May and the early and middle [part] of June,” Rockinberg read from a note from the town administrator during the April 1 Town Council meeting. “We are targeting the July meeting to put forth a recommended candidate.”

The start date is slated for the first week in August.

The role will transition directly from Weierbach to the new hire and should not require someone to hold the position in the interim, according to McCleary.

“I’m very excited that this will be a very good vetting process,” Rockinberg said.

The town administrator reports directly to the mayor and oversees multiple departments including those of community planning, engineering, parks, public works and the town police, according to the job posting. The town administrator is responsible for oversight of town programs and facilitation of municipal services through existing departments.

Th posting defines the role as full-time with a salary of $80,000-$100,000 per year depending on the hire’s qualifications.

The Town of Mount Airy has a population of about 9,500 people and an annual budget of $5.5 million dollars, according to the job posting.

The posting seeks a candidate with local government or management experience as well as education in the field of public administration. Additional responsibilities and requirements are listed in the job description.
